RAÚL DEL CHANO

(01)  HISTORY

(02)  FORMATION

(03)  TRAJECTORY

As a vocational banister maker and passionate explorer of new forms, I work in a crafty way transmitting tradition mixed with innovation.

01

I am Raúl Hoyo Salvador, but professionally known as Raúl del Chano, honoring my family nickname. My grandfather was Uncle Pedro José “el Chano” from Los Villanuevas, the town where my studio is located, Bajeras Diez.

Although I consider myself a native of Barcelona, I have strong roots in Olba, just like Master Manuel Pertegaz. My maternal family comes from Casucho, Los Poviles, and Los Villanuevas.

My work is influenced by my childhood summers and my grandpa. We crafted reed boats while swimming in the Mijares River and repaired chairs with sisal braiding in the afternoon sun. My aunt used to cut cape patterns for hair salons, and I would enjoy seeing her innovative strips of fabric weaves called “cisclas” in a million colors.

I present myself as a provocateur who displays his work with naked male figures. I seek harmony between the natural beauty of the body and the materials used in my creations, displaying nature at its purest.

02

After completing my studies in Barcelona, I lived for several years in Madrid and also in London. In 2008, I returned to the Condal city.

In the Spanish capital, I started my career as a visual merchandiser, merging fashion and decoration,  making my dream real. I have left my mark of ephemeral art all over the world.

With my return to Barcelona, the feeling of going back to my roots and traditions is reborn. I started my training in Catalan basketry and later had the opportunity to learn from international banister makers.

Little by little, I began to innovate and create new volumes and textures. That’s how my first baskets were born, and later, sculptures. I mainly use wicker, cane, and seaweed rope to create organic and delicate pieces, full of magic and history.

Some of my works have been part of such important exhibitions as the ARCO fair in Madrid or the Salone del Mobile in Milan. My sculptures have also been admired in window shops on prestigious streets such as 5th Avenue in New York, Regent Street in London, Galleria Vittorio Emanuele in Milan, or Place de la Madeleine in Paris.

Returning to my more classic side, I have specialized in creating reed ceilings, so common in the farmhouses or village houses of the Mediterranean area of our country. A craftsmanship of construction, dressing spaces between wooden beam and beam like tapestries. For this, I use peeled cane cut during the old moon of January, as traditionally done, and woven with esparto rope.

Currently, my work also extends to event decoration, creating unique visual experiences. In addition, I am focused on my studio “Bajeras Diez,” collaborating with national and international interior designers to create pieces with emotional value, loving craftsmanship, and striving to be a better Banastero every day.
